2012 Climate Change Symposium
GVI attended the 2012 Health and Climate Change Symposium at Fiji National University - Hosted by FNU, the Ministry of Health, The World Health Organisation, and SPC. Through lectures and group discussions the symposium looked at how specifically climate change is effecting the livelihoods and health of Pacific Island Nations.
From water shortages to increased incidences of mental illness the findings have been both interesting and worrying. Discussions on community level adaptation schemes were specifically of interest and tied in closely with GVI's holistic approach to Yasawan Communities.
The Symposium concluded that water security, food security, new agriculture, increased health awareness, environmental asset conservation, disaster preparedness, and adaptation are the keys to building resilience to the negative impacts of climate change in small Pacific Island Nations.
