Week 7 at RMMS

The highlight of this week was a special visit from a family from New Zealand. They had heard about RMMS from a previous volunteer called Susan, who was one of the first volunteers on the project. They had set up a project back at the their local primary school to pack 150 shoe boxes full of gifts for the children. It was like Christmas and the kids were all delighted with their toys, clothes, toiletries and books. There were a sea of smiling faces and several kids sporting trendy new sun glasses and baseball caps.

We made further progress with the dorm refurbishments and we are on target to finish them by the end of next week. We have now completed the painting in dorms 2 and 3 and dorm 1 is almost ready for painting. The pupils in class 3 have also been working on some posters to decorate the dorms with.

Friday afternoons means sports. This week we helped run a rounders tournament and tug-of-war competition with the kids. Rounders was an instant hit, but after some outrageous cheating it disintegrated into the normal chaos. Overall everyone involved had a great time though, with the green and yellow team coming out on top. In the tug-of-war competition the school was divided into houses and they competed in year groups. As usual the volunteers and the teachers couldn’t resist getting involved and in front of a packed audience Mr Nabuli, Moira, Laura and Miss Sofi came out victorious.

This week we also said goodbye to Elin who has been on the education programme for 8 weeks. Class 7 hosted a tea party to say farewell and they all had their faces painted for the fist time ever!
