Marine programs coming to GVI Fiji!

Bula Vinaka from Fiji,

Great news coming from our Yasawa HUB...we are very excited to have finally launched our marine projects in Fiji...yes, we know you are too!

Starting this October volunteers will be able to join our Spinner Dolphin conservation project. This unique marine conservation project will allow you to play an active role in the research and conservation of spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris). Spinner dolphins are listed by the IUCN as ‘data deficient’. You will be able to make a positive contribution to the long-term protection of this species whilst experiencing Fijian culture and hospitality at its best. This is the first project of its kind in the South Pacific and is being operated in full collaboration with the local community and led by Dr. Cara Miller, Pacific Islands Program Manager for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society International.

And from January 2012, we are starting to collect marine ecosystem data in the Yasawa Islands. For this new Fiji Marine expedition, GVI has partnered with locally relevant organizations and local communities. The communities that we work with do not have access to the resources to carry out regular data collection in their traditional fishing grounds. We aim to collect very specific data that the community needs in order to make more informed decisions with regards to management of their vital resources. We will provide reports of our findings to the Department of Fisheries and the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network (FLMMA) amongst others.

This new projects fits in perfectly with our current educational and construction projects.

We hope you are as excited as we are about this two new additions and hope to see out out here very soon
